How to dodge in MultiVersus?

The game itself will tell you that dodging is as simple as pressing Shift Left or L on PC, B or RT on Xbox, and Circle or RT on PlayStation. However, you may notice that during gameplay these inputs do not always work as expected. The reason is quite simple: MultiVersus now has a stop option. To block, you must neutrally dodge when the enemy's attack hits you. Neutral avoidance simply means undirected avoidance. Basically, you can dodge left, right, up, down, or neutral. The beta actually has a dedicated shortcut for dodging neutral attacks.

This was removed when the parry was added, probably because the developers wanted the parry to require more active aiming and precision. Personally, I think this change makes it more likely that you'll accidentally stop when trying to dodge. To prevent your dodges from becoming parries, I recommend breaking them into separate parts. Try to get the concept of neutral dodge out of your mind and instead think of it as a direct attack, with neutral actions reserved for blocking.

Since parrying requires a neutral dodge, always indicate your direction when dodging to ensure you never do it accidentally. Dodge/parry isn't the only control nuance that isn't adequately explained in the game's settings menu, there's a lot the game won't tell you, and if you're not into Street Fighter or something similar, it probably won't feel intuitive to you. There is another aspect of dodging that is a little different from most other games, and that is the dodge counter.

The avoidance meter explained

You may notice that sometimes dodging is easier for you, and sometimes you feel like you have to dodge for exactly one millisecond to avoid getting hit. This is not just your perception and has nothing to do with the ongoing attack. The dodge timer determines how long your invulnerability lasts while dodging. Larger counters mean more forgiveness and smaller counters mean your dodging ability improves over time. The dodge meter is a blue bar in any form and, when full, has six bars of charge. Dodge depletes a bar and the dodge window gets smaller as that bar depletes. It's subtle, but your character actually flashes white when you dodge. If you look closely, you'll see that the duration of this effect decreases as your dodge meter depletes, so there's actually a visual indication of how precise your dodge level should be each time.
