After defeating the opponents, the Pale Monk will come out and be available for talking. He gives a unique key from him to the locked chest as a reward.

Things to Get in the Chest

You can get an amulet called the Sanctified Amulet for opening a chest in the cathedral. Later in the game, you come across an altar in the church. You place the amulet on the altar and a new chest appears. Inside, you get the Exorcist's Cassock, a really powerful set of armor for your character.
