The first thing you need to know is that you can make use of various structures in your village to use your villagers as soldiers. You can build barracks to train your villagers to become troops. In order to train a villager, you will have to invest some gold, as well as pay for the maintenance of the troop during that time.

With the villagers ready, you can assign them to a garrison within the barracks or send them to the front line. The garrisons can fire their bows at incoming threats and those on the front line will participate in the combat.

In order to deploy troops in an area, you can use the rally point to place a flag in the area. The point is found in the user interface of the barracks, so press the Mark Combat Area button and after deploying your forces, your soldiers will be ready until you send them to the barracks or change the rally point.

Make sure you don't keep them in the field without a command for too long or they will starve to death.
