In this regard, the following guide will consider different strategies to defeat Gaius and emerge victorious.
Commander Gaius has two primary challenges: his opening charge and his ensuing Gravity Missile combo, both capable of killing. Though these attacks must be carefully watched for, most of the rest of his moveset is quite pattern-based and either easily dodged or countered with a well-timed dodge or an aggressive move.
For a simple, albeit less thrilling, approach, they can employ the "pillar sorcery" strategy. By leveling up Intelligence and Arcane, staying behind the pillar in the arena, and just letting Impenetrable Thorns take most of Gaius' attacks, they will have secured but unrewarding means of triumph.
On the other hand, players seeking a more aggressive and challenging version can turn to a Power-Stanced Great Stars build coupled with Incantations. This combo will milk the weapon's incredibly high damage output and bleed buildup against Gaius. In posture damage and especially bleed effects, the Great Stars easily outperform other exceptional choices like Bloodhound's Fang and Bloodfiend's Arm.

Weapons:
- Main Hand: Heavy Greatstars — Deals increased damage when held in two hands.
- Ash of War: Cragblade — Allows for more combinations in offense.
- Seal: Dragon Communion Seal — Needed to cast Incantations.
Talismans:
- Erdtree's Favor — Boosts maximum HP and FP.
- Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman — Raises the negation of physical damage.
- Claw Talisman — Raises physical damage.
- Two-Headed Turtle Talisman — Raises stamina recovery.
Incantations:
- Golden Vow: Temporary attack power boost.
- Black Flame's Protection: Defensive buff for damage negation
- Beastial Vitality: Restores health of the player.
- Flame, Grant Me Strength: Temporary Strength Boost
Armor:
- Rakshasa Armor: Preffered due to damage boosts it provides.
Stats:
- Vigor: As much health as possible for survivability.
- Mind: Enough Focus Points to cast spells.
- Endurance: Medium for balance, so you will not run out of stamina too fast in prolonged combat.
- Strength: High strength for good weapons
- Dexterity: High dexterity for more damage and weapon skill.
- Intelligence: Low, only as much as necessary to enable spellcasting.
- Faith: Medium, mainly for Incantations.
- Arcane: High arcane for added damage and status effect accumulation.
For fighting with this build, always be near Gaius and only attack with jumps. The idea here is to space out his attacks with well-placed aerials. While three jump attacks will normally stagger him, the Cragblade is powerful enough that it's possible to stagger him with two if they're both landed correctly. As far as damage output enhancement goes, the Messmer's Flame grease will deal bonus fire damage over the base damage of the Great Stars. While I went with the Heavy infusion for straight-up power, it is still an interesting alternative with the Bleed infusion—when one prioritizes hemorrhage potential in the weapon.
This is all that is required in terms of getting Commander Gaius in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, you just have to follow the instructions to achieve it and continue progressing in this great game.
