Discover the intricacies of diplomacy in Civilization 7. Learn strategiesDiplomacy in Civilization 7 has been significantly revamped, introducing a new resource, Influence, and a more nuanced approach to international relations. This guide breaks down the intricacies of the system, from acquiring Influence to managing complex relationships and leveraging war support.
Influence: The Currency of Diplomacy
Influence is the key to interacting with other civilizations. You start with 10 Influence per turn on Standard speed, but can gain more through various means:
- Discoveries: Finding goodie huts with scouts.
- Buildings, Wonders, and Leader Abilities: Some provide Influence bonuses.
- Tension-Creating Actions: Settling near another leader's capital, for example, generates Influence, though it also increases tension.
Diplomatic Actions: Spending Your Influence
There are four main categories of diplomatic actions:
Endeavors (Friendly Interactions): These mutually beneficial actions require Influence. A "Research Collaboration," for instance, benefits both civilizations. Sanctions (Penalties): Sanctions negatively impact another civilization's output but damage your relationship with them.5 "Hamper Military Production," for example, increases the cost of their military units by 20% but reduces your relationship by 15. Treaties (Long-Term Agreements): Treaties strengthen relationships and offer mutual benefits. "Open Borders" and "Improve Trade Relations" grant access to more land and improved trade opportunities.7 Espionage (Secret Operations): Espionage actions carry high risk and high reward.8 They can provide bonuses or inflict debuffs, but have a chance of being exposed, leading to relationship damage and reduced Influence gain. Responding to Diplomatic Actions:
Other leaders can also initiate diplomatic actions towards you. You can respond in three ways (except for Espionage):
- Support: Costs Influence but grants a benefit (e.g., gold, production).
- Accept: Doesn't cost Influence, but the proposer receives greater benefits.
- Reject: Costs Influence, blocks the action, and returns the spent Influence to the initiator.
Independent Powers and City-States:
Independent powers are settlements scattered across the map. By spendingInfluence, you can befriend them. Once they become City-States, yourdiplomatic options expand:
- Military Support: Influence their military to pressure neighbors.
- Levy Units: Take control of their units permanently.
- Incite Raids: Encourage them to attack other civilizations (but not you).
Diplomatic Relationships: Levels of Interaction
There are five levels of diplomatic relationships:
- Helpful
- Friendly
- Neutral
- Unfriendly
- Hostile15
Certain actions require a specific relationship level. For example, a military alliance requires a "Helpful" relationship.
War Support: The Key to Victory
War Support significantly impacts the outcome of wars. Low War Support leads to War Weariness, hindering your ability to fight effectively.17 Declaring a Surprise War (before a "Hostile" relationship) grants the defender a War Support buff. You can boost your War Support by spending Influence. It's generally advantageous to have a "Hostile" relationship beforedeclaring war to avoid giving the enemy a War Support advantage.
Key Diplomatic Strategies:
- Balance Influence Gain and Spending: Manage your Influence wisely.
- Consider the Long-Term Consequences: Diplomatic actions have lasting effects on relationships.
- Utilize Treaties: Build strong relationships for long-term benefits.
- Be Mindful of War Support: Prepare for war diplomatically before engaging militarily.
- Use City-States Strategically: Leverage City-States for military support, resources, and strategic advantages.
By understanding and utilizing these diplomatic mechanics, you can shapethe world of Civilization 7 through strategic alliances, calculatedrivalries, and careful management of your Influence.
