Discover the Beyerdynamic Amiron 300 in our detailed review. Uncover its features, sound quality, and performance to see if it's the right choice for you!
The $279.99 Beyerdynamic Amiron 300 earphones present themselves as a handsome option in the realm of noise-cancelling wireless earbuds, facing significant competition. We commend their clean aesthetic and comfortable fit, alongside their well-balanced audio delivery, the user-friendly application, and their reliable battery performance. However, it's important to note that while the active noise cancellation (ANC) is generally effective, it unfortunately introduces audio artifacts that can detract from the overall listening pleasure. When considering alternatives within the same price bracket, models such as the $299 Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds, the $299.99 Sony WF-1000XM5, and the $249 Apple AirPods Pro 2 emerge as superior choices for noise cancellation prowess, audio fidelity, and seamless iPhone integration, respectively, and they remain our Editors' Choice selections.

Beyerdynamic Amiron 300 Review

Design and Comfort: Compact and Ergonomic

The Beyerdynamic Amiron 300 boast a compact and unassuming stemless design, allowing the earbuds to sit snugly and comfortably within the ear. While this design can make locating the touch-sensitive controls a minor challenge, it significantly enhances comfort, particularly when worn beneath a hat or while resting your head. The touch controls themselves exhibit responsive behavior upon being tapped. The earbuds are available in two elegant color options: black and cream (an off-white hue), the latter of which was provided for this evaluation.

Fit and Stability: Suitable for Light Activity

The earbuds demonstrate a respectable ability to remain in place within my ears, although occasional minor adjustments are needed to ensure a perfect seal. The inclusion of five sets of varying-sized silicone eartips proves beneficial in achieving an optimal fit for individual users. While I found them adequate for walking and general use, their stability was not sufficient for more vigorous activities like running or other forms of sports. The IP54 water and sweat resistance rating offers a degree of reassurance against minor moisture exposure.

Internal Hardware and Connectivity: High-Res Audio Ready

Internally, the earbuds are powered by 10mm dynamic drivers, capable of reproducing a wide frequency spectrum from 20Hz to 40kHz, thus earning them a High Resolution audio certification. For wireless connectivity, they utilize Bluetooth 5.3 technology and support a range of audio codecs, including AAC, LDAC, and SBC, catering to different devices and audio quality preferences. Bluetooth multipoint functionality is also integrated, allowing connection to multipledevices simultaneously, although testing revealed some instability inmaintaining a consistent connection with two devices concurrently.

Portability and Battery Life: Compact Case with Extended Power

Each individual earbud weighs a mere 0.2 ounces, and they are housed within a spring-top charging case weighing 1.8 ounces. I noted that the spring mechanism of the case could be improved, as it exhibited a tendency to eject the earbuds upon impact if the case was dropped. The case offers versatile charging options, supporting both USB-C wired charging and Qi wireless charging. The earbuds themselves are equipped with substantial batteries, providing up to seven hours of listening time with ANC enabled and extending to ten hours with ANC disabled. The charging case further extends the total battery life by an additional 28 hours. Notably, a quick 10-minute charge can provide approximately two hours of listening time.

Software and Features: The Beyerdynamic App Experience

The dedicated Beyerdynamic App, available for both Android and iOS operating systems, proves to be both intuitive in its design and highly functional. A significant advantage is that it can be used without requiring the creation of a user account. The main interface conveniently displays the most frequently accessed settings, while asecondary screen offers a more comprehensive array of customizationoptions. Users can select from various preset equalizer (EQ) modes or fine-tune the audio output using the integrated five-band custom equalizer. The app also allows for precise adjustment of ANC and transparency mode levels, as well as toggling wind noise detection. Furthermore, it enables users to activate or deactivate smart assistant integration and customize the on-ear touch controls. Additional features include a low-latency mode for improved synchronization with video content, configurable wear detection responses, the option to enable the high-quality LDAC codec (depending on the connected smartphone), and adjustable automatic shutdown timing.

Noise Cancellation and Transparency: A Mixed Performance

The Beyerdynamic Amiron 300 earbuds provide a baseline level of passive noise isolation thanks to the inherent sealing properties of the in-ear silicone eartips. They are also equipped with active noise cancellation (ANC) and a transparency mode. To effectively manage external sounds, the buds incorporate a system of six integrated microphones. Overall, the noise cancellation performs adequately, although it falls short of the industry-leading capabilities demonstrated by Bose. At its minimum setting, the ANC effectively reduces lower-frequency ambient noise, such as that found in a bustling cafe, while still allowing voices and sudden, transient sounds to be heard.Increasing the ANC intensity further attenuates lower frequencies and reduces the volume of voices, though complete elimination is not achieved. The earbuds excel at reducing noise below the 100Hz threshold, making them particularly effective against low-frequency droningsounds. However, a significant drawback is their sensitivity to head movements when ANC is active, often introducing audio artifacts described as a "fluttering paper" sound during neck rotations. Thefrequency of this occurrence detracts noticeably from the overalllistening experience.

In contrast, the transparency mode stands out as impressive. It provides a remarkably clear passthrough of external sounds, almost to the point of feeling as though the earbuds are not inserted at all. However, a subtle white noise floor is present, and similar audio artifacts can be introduced during head movements. A notable positive is that both the ANC and transparency modes feature wind noise detection and suppression, effectively mitigating the disruptive clipping sounds that can occurwhen wind encounters the microphones, a feature not universally presentin competing earbuds.

Audio Quality and Soundstage: A Balanced and Detailed Presentation

The earbuds are engineered to deliver a well-balanced sound signature right out of the box, without requiring any manual equalization adjustments. The default EQ profile manages the audio presentation effectively across various genres. When listening to The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” the Amiron 300 deliver deep, impactful bass and sub-bass, while the synthesized melody retains its crispness and clarity. Both layers of the vocal harmony are clearly discernible within the mix. The earbuds also provide a sufficiently wide soundstage, allowing listeners to easily distinguish the spatial placement of individual instruments from left to right. This relatively flat frequency response translates well to tracks like Kendrick Lamar’s “Loyalty,” where the vocals of both Lamar and Rihanna remain prominent even as the deep sub-bass frequencies emerge, ensuring that the melody does not become lost in the low-end. The earbuds also demonstrate respectable performance in the sub-bass region, accurately reproducing the very low frequencies in this track, which can often be a challenge for audio devices withsmaller drivers.

Bill Callahan’s “Drover” further exemplifies the audio prowess of these earphones. From the rich and full timbre of Callahan’s baritone vocals to the plaintive wail of the electric guitar, the track’s lush instrumentation is rendered with clarity and detail. Even the subtle bass undertones and the ambient room noise within the recording find their appropriate place within the overall sonic landscape.

The earphones also perform admirably with classical music, as demonstrated by John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary. They capably present the track's diverse array of instruments andskillfully convey the ambience present in some of the lowest and most nuanced notes and vocal passages. In the movement “Lazarus Rises From the Dead,” the buds deliver a striking dynamic range, transitioning smoothly from hushed, subtle tones to a frightening and cacophonous crescendo. The track’s overall eerie ambiance is effectively conveyed through the wide soundstage, providing ample space for the various contributing instruments to breathe and resonate.

Microphone Performance: Clear in Quiet Environments, Struggles with Noise

The integrated microphones effectively capture the user’s voice with clarity in quiet indoorenvironments, although the resulting audio exhibits a somewhat distant quality. However, the microphones struggle to effectively suppress background noise, making them less ideal for calls in louder settings.
