Master the art of parrying in Avowed with our comprehensive guide. Learn techniques to counter attacks.
Parrying is a satisfying and effective combat technique in Avowed, allowing you to turn enemy attacks against them. This guide explains how to unlock, execute, and utilize parrying to your advantage.
Unlocking the Parry Ability
Parrying isn't available from the start. You must unlock it through the Abilities menu.
Open the menu and go to the "Abilities" screen, then select the "Ranger" tab.The Parry ability is located in the middle column at the top. To unlock it, you must first spend an ability point in any of the three core ability trees.Once you've spent that initial point, you can then unlock Parry.Parry Ranks and Progression
The Parry ability has three ranks, each offering increased effectiveness:
Rank 1:
- Player Level Requirement: N/A (1 Point Spent)
- Description: Unlocks Parry.
Rank 2:
- Player Level Requirement: Player Level 5
- Description: Increases Parry efficiency by 25%, dealing greater Stun when parrying enemies.
Rank 3:
- Player Level Requirement: Player Level 8
- Description: Increases Parry efficiency by 50%, dealing greater Stun when parrying enemies. Additionally, at level 10, you can unlock "Arrow Deflection," a separate ability that allows you to block arrows and other projectiles by parrying.
Executing a Parry
To parry, you must block just before an enemy's attack connects. A successful parry is indicated by a distinct metallic clanking sound and a visual cue on screen as the enemy staggers. Timing is crucial and may vary slightly between enemy types. Practice is key to mastering the parry timing, but it's generally more forgiving than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.
Parry Limitations
- Unparryable Attacks: Some attacks, indicated by a red circle, cannot be parried and must be dodged.
- Weapon Restrictions: Not all weapons can parry. Generally, single-handed and two-handed melee weapons can parry (unless they are in your off-hand). Shields equipped in the off-hand can also be used for parrying. Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot parry.
The Benefits of Parrying
Parrying offers several advantages:
- Stunning Enemies: A successful parry stuns the attacker, creating an opening for a counter-attack.
- Damage Mitigation: Parrying effectively prevents incoming damage.
Strategic Considerations
Parrying is most effective for melee-focused builds that engage in close-quarters combat. Ranged characters may find less value in the ability. However, Avowed allows for easy respecs, so you can experiment with Parry and remove it later if it doesn't suit your playstyle.
