The first thing you have to do is add friends, they can be friends with whom you have played in the Ranked Duels by selecting their name and choosing Friend Request to send it.
You can also add acquaintances by selecting the Profile tab at the top right of the screen and then select Friends and search for the player's profile name or directly type their ID (which is on their profile) if you know them and select "Search".
In that same friend tab you can access the friend requests that have been sent to you, and you have not accepted.
