You can drop items directly from inventory, and transfer items by looting a crate, or transfer items from your inventory to regular storage crates or the slot in the production machinery menu.

In the bandit camps you will find chests that you can loot to empty your inventory, for this you can access the same chests menu and these chests usually have good free space. To drop items you will have to press 'Tab' to open the inventory > select the item > press Space to drop the item.
