Lewis doesn't give any hints, so you are to fulfill a real detective mission around Pelican Town. Ironically, these shorts turn out to be in quite an unexpected place: Marnie's room on Marnie's Farm.
You will need a minimum of two hearts for friendship with Marnie in order for you to gain entry into her room. This requires you to give her gifts of food she likes, like lunch, pumpkin leaves, quartz, egg, milk, or any flower but poppies.
Now that you've unlocked her room, the shorts will be lying on the floor. Bring them back to Lewis to receive 750 gold as well as a bonus to your friendship level with him.
