The
Cool Cucumber Badge in
PEAK is one of the most coveted rewards, awarded to players who successfully navigate the scorching
Mesa biome without letting their
Heat level exceed 10%. While the objective sounds simple, the Mesa’s relentless heat makes this badge a true test of patience and strategy.
In this guide, we’ll break down the most effective methods to conquer the challenge, along with essential tips to avoid overheating.
What is the Cool Cucumber Badge in PEAK?
The
Cool Cucumber Badge is part of the
Mesa biome update, available only when the biome is active (currently replacing Alpine until
August 18, 2025). To earn it, you must:
- Traverse the Mesa biome (from the starting point to the Mesa Campfire).
- Keep your Heat level below 10% at all times.
If your Heat exceeds this threshold—even for a second—you’ll have to restart.
Best Strategies to Beat the Heat
1. Travel at Night (The Slow & Steady Method)
The Mesa’s temperature drops significantly at night, making it the safest time to traverse.
Pros:
- Lower ambient heat means slower Heat buildup.
- Less reliance on consumables like Sunscreen.
Cons:
- Reduced visibility makes navigation harder.
- Slower movement in certain areas.
Tips for Night Travel:
- Stick to shaded paths even at night—some spots still radiate heat.
- Avoid sprinting; move cautiously to prevent accidental heat spikes.
2. Find & Use Sunscreen (The Most Reliable Method)
Sunscreen is a rare but game-changing item that temporarily reduces Heat buildup, making it the best way to secure the badge.
Where to Find Sunscreen:
- Ancient Luggage (Mesa Crash Site) – Highest drop chance.
- Klin Biome Luggage – Secondary farming spot.
- Random Supply Drops – Rare but possible.
How to Use Sunscreen Effectively:
- Apply it just before entering the Mesa to maximize its duration.
- Avoid wasting it on short trips—save it for the full Mesa traversal.
Critical Mistakes to Avoid
1. Assuming Shade Fully Protects You
Even in shaded areas, the game sometimes registers unexpected Heat spikes (e.g., standing near cacti or rocks). Always monitor your Heat meter.
2. Sprinting Through Open Areas
Running in direct sunlight rapidly increases Heat. Instead:
- Move in short bursts.
- Use natural cover (rocks, ruins, cliffs) to break line-of-sight with the sun.
3. Ignoring Alternative Routes
Some paths have more shade than others. Scout ahead before committing to a route.
Final Push to the Mesa Campfire
Once you’ve navigated the Mesa without overheating, reach the Mesa Campfire to unlock the badge. It’s one of the 10 exclusive rewards in the Mesa update and a mark of true endurance.
