The twenty-one heroes available in Overwatch in 2016 were divided into four categories: Offense, Defense, Tank, and Support. Some of them were repurposed, some had new skills, and yet others had altered duties. See the complete list of Overwatch Classic heroes and their ability sets down below.
Heroes for Offense in Overwatch Classic
Character Abilities
- Cassidy: A classic gunslinger with a powerful revolver and a flashy ultimate that lets him lock onto enemies and fire with deadly precision.
- Genji: A nimble ninja with cybernetic enhancements, capable of wall-climbing, double-jumping, and deflecting projectiles. His ultimate transforms him into a deadly blademaster.
- Pharah: A high-flying soldier armed with a rocket launcher and jetpack, capable of raining destruction from above.
- Reaper: A shadowy reaper with a pair of hellfire shotguns and the ability to phase through walls and teleport. His ultimate unleashes a whirlwind of death.
- Soldier: 76: A versatile combatant with a pulse rifle and a biotic field to heal allies. His tactical visor grants him pinpoint accuracy.
- Tracer: A time-bending agent with pulse pistols and the ability to blink through space and rewind time. Her pulse bomb is a powerful area-denial tool.
Classic Overwatch: Heroes of Defense
- Bastion: A versatile turret-bot who can transform between Recon (mobile) and Sentry (stationary) modes. His ultimate, Tank, is a powerful mobile cannon.
- Hanzo: A nimble archer with a variety of arrow types, including the destructive Dragonstrike ultimate.
- Junkrat: A chaotic explosives expert who can trap, knock back, and detonate his way to victory with his ultimate, Rip-Tire.
- Mei: A cryokinetic engineer who can freeze enemies, create ice walls, and unleash a devastating Blizzard ultimate.
- Torbjorn: A dwarven engineer who builds and upgrades turrets, providing defensive support and offensive firepower. His ultimate, Molten Core, empowers him and his turret.
- Widowmaker: A deadly assassin who excels at long-range sniping and close-quarters combat. Her ultimate, Infra-sight, provides valuable intel for her team.
Classic Overwatch: Heroes with Tanks
- Reinhardt: A stalwart warrior wielding a Rocket Hammer and deploying a protective Barrier Field.
- Roadhog: A brutal fighter with a Scrap Gun for both close and mid-range combat, who can pull enemies in with his Chain Hook and heal himself with Take a Breather. His ultimate, Whole Hog, unleashes a torrent of damage and knockbacks.
- Winston: A genius gorilla armed with a Tesla Cannon and a Jump Pack that allows him to leap into the fray. He can create a protective Barrier Projector for himself or his allies and unleash Primal Rage to become a powerful melee combatant.
- Zarya: A high-energy warrior whose Particle Cannon can switch between a beam and a grenade launcher. Her defensive capabilities are unmatched, allowing her to create a Particle Barrier for herself or project one onto an ally with Projected Barrier. Her ultimate, Graviton Surge, traps enemies in a gravity well, setting them up for a devastating team attack.

Overwatch offers a wide array of heroes, each with unique abilities. For example, Lucio is a supportive hero who can heal and boost allies with his music, while Mercy specializes in resurrection and healing.
