This is often done at the start of the game. You can tell by looking at the bottom right corner of the screen in the "Save" logo. Basically you don't have to do anything, just pay attention to the logo periodically.

How does manual saving work?

To do this, open the start menu and check the screen above to select Save and the slot you want to use. As you can imagine, manual saves are very different from automatic saves. If you're in the middle of a fight, you won't be able to save your game manually. So you'll need to get away from these areas before you can save. The selection to continue from the home screen will load your last automatic save as default.
