In
Grounded 2, a key to surviving the treacherous backyard is a robust set of gear. Upgrading your weapons and armor is essential for increasing your power level, allowing you to take on larger, more dangerous insects and explore challenging new biomes. Fortunately, this crucial mechanic becomes available relatively early in the game, but it requires completing a few specific steps. This guide will break down how to unlock the ability to upgrade your gear, what you need to do it, and where to find the necessary materials.
Grounded 2: How to Get Omni-Shovel Level 2
How to Unlock Upgrading in Grounded 2
To begin upgrading your equipment, you must first unlock the recipes for the
Smithing Station,
Brittle Whetstones, and
Brittle Plating.
"The Art of War" Mission: This is the main mission where you'll unlock the upgrade mechanic. During this quest, you will be tasked with finding a special item.Find the TURBO Stolen Optical Disc: This optical disc is located in an area guarded by the O.R.C. Northern Scorpion Jr. You'll need to defeat or sneak past this formidable foe to claim the disc. The Scorpion Jr. can be found inside a tunnel that you'll be directed to during the mission.Expand the Science Shop: Once you have the disc, take it to a Ranger Station and use it to expand the Science Shop's inventory.Purchase the Recipe: You can now purchase the blueprint for the Smithing Station for 500 Raw Science. This will also unlock the basic recipes for Brittle Whetstones and Brittle Plating.Upgrading Weapons and Armor
With the Smithing Station built and the recipes unlocked, you can now begin upgrading your gear.
- Upgrading Weapons: Requires Brittle Whetstones. Each upgrade costs 5 Brittle Whetstones and increases the weapon's Damage and Durability by 10%. The cost increases by 5 with each subsequent upgrade.
- Upgrading Armor: Requires Brittle Plating. Each upgrade costs 2 Brittle Plating and increases the armor's Defense and Durability by 10%. The cost increases by 2 with each subsequent upgrade.
How to Craft Brittle Whetstone and Brittle Plating
The initial recipes for these items require specific shards, but you can find more efficient recipes later.
Item | Recipe | Station | Unlock Requirement |
Brittle Whetstone | 1 Brittle Quartzite Shard | Workbench | None (unlocked with the Smithing Station) |
| 1 Sap, 1 Larva Spike | Workbench | Ice Cream Cart Optical Disc |
Brittle Plating | 1 Brittle Marble Shard | Workbench | None (unlocked with the Smithing Station) |
| 1 Sap, 1 Grub Hide | Workbench | Pine Hill Optical Disc |
The Ice Cream Cart Optical Disc is found on a body in the Ice Cream Cart region, and the Pine Hill Optical Disc is located within a spider den in the Pine Hill region. These discs, when brought to a Ranger Station, unlock the more resource-efficientrecipes.
Where to Find Quartzite and Marble
Brittle Quartzite and Brittle Marble shards are found in deposits that are notdiscoverable using the Resource Scanner, making them difficult to trackdown. You'll need an upgraded Omni-Hammer (at least Tier 1) to mine them.
- Hatchery Anthill: A great early-game source for both Quartzite and Marble. This locationis where you'll also find the Red Soldier Ant Egg for your first Buggy.
- Toxic Anthill: Located underneath the Picnic Table, this area is rich with bothBrittle and Sturdy Quartzite and Marble deposits. Be prepared to facedangerous enemies like Orb Weavers and fireflies.
- O.R.C. Tunnel: The tunnel where you find the TURBO Optical Disc also contains several deposits.
- Other Locations: You can also find deposits in various caves, around the large tree inthe center of the Entrance area, and in the flower beds near the Statuearea.
