Grand Theft Auto V is a legend of the gaming industry.

It has spanned three generations of consoles, the first game to do so without a significant remaster or rerelease. Much of that longevity is due to GTA Online, a free-for-all playground where gamers can live to excess, conduct heists, run from the police, and build a criminal empire.

The game is creaking a little under current technology; it is showing its age, and gamers are maybe beginning to get a little tired. TechRadar.com suggests that GTA VI is in development, but it is a fair way off. That means Rockstar will keep adding content to their current title; episodic releases are intended to keep gamers happy and squeeze a few more dollars from their pockets.

Some popular add-ons have included The Cayo Perico Heist, Arena War and Los Santos Tuners. One of the most popular was the Diamond Resort and Casino, which added layers of gameplay still being used today, a couple of years after it dropped. When you enter a GTA Online lobby, you’ll often find multiple players around the location in north Los Santos.

One of the reasons is the Wheel of Fortune, where gamers are given a gift every day. It might be something useless, such as RP, or it could be in-game cash or vehicles. Every day, gamers get a single spin, which keeps them coming back for more. Once they’re there, they can indulge in a variety of games, including poker.

Poker is in the news right now in the real world; the World Series of Poker is winding towards a conclusion at the end of the month, which only increases the game’s standing. It is described by Poker.org as one of the world’s most popular pastimes, and whilst many US residents can’t play for real due to legislation, they can play in the fictional casino. Technically, it is a real money game; players can buy in-game currency to bet with, but there is no reverse conversion, so it isn’t subject to laws.

What is the poker game in GTA? Is it as much fun as Red Dead Redemption 2 or Far Cry 3? Sadly, no, it isn’t. Instead of opting for Texas Hold’em, or another skilful variant, they settled on three-card poker, a simple game of chance.

You can play in two locations in the casino. At the start, the tables are towards the back of the venue on the gaming floor. There are low stakes and high stakes tables there, but if you own a penthouse, you can buy a private table, available all of the time. There’s no real difference in the action, other than peace and quiet in your own room.

The dealer deals you three cards and takes three cards for themselves. You see your cards and work out whether to place a wager on the hand. There’s no flop, no swapping of cards, just a straight-up decision. If the dealer has less than a queen high, they won’t play, so you win whatever. Otherwise, it is a random outcome with little input from you. It does mean the odds are slightly in your favor as there are more winning hands available to you than to the dealer.

There are some great prize pots on offer; a maximum bet and top hand can see you win $600,000 in-game currency, which could be enough to push you towards the sports car you wish to buy. It might not quite give you the lifestyle change a real win would, but in-game, it can give you more material possession, which is what GTA is all about.

Next time you’re in the Diamond Resort and Casino, check it out and try not to imagine how great it could have been if Rockstar had used their Red Dead Redemption poker game in GTA.
