Along the way, they’ll face intense boss battles, with Grumpy Kong being one of the first major challenges. While this towering foe may seem intimidating at first, there’s a simple strategy to take him down quickly. Here’s a step-by-step guide to defeating Grumpy Kong with ease.

Grumpy Kong Boss Fight Breakdown

Phase 1: Destroy the Dirt Layer & Club

Grumpy Kong starts the battle encased in a massive dirt-covered statue, wielding a giant club. Your first priority is to eliminate his weapon to reduce his offensive power.

• Dodge his attacks: Grumpy Kong swings his club when you’re close, so use the roll (ZL) to evade.
• Enter Bananza Mode: Hold L+R to activate Bananza Mode, enhancing your attacks.
• Destroy the club: Wait for him to slam his club down, then strike it repeatedly to break it.
• Target the dirt layer: With the club gone, focus on dismantling the statue’s base layer. Bananza Mode makes this quick and easy.

Phase 2: Break the Second Layer

Once the dirt layer is destroyed, Grumpy Kong’s machine reveals a second layer.

• Avoid charge punches: While charged attacks deal more damage, they leave you vulnerable to his slam attacks.
• Use rapid punches: Instead, rely on fast, standard attacks in Bananza Mode to chip away at his defenses efficiently.

Phase 3: Defeat Grumpy Kong Directly

After destroying the machine’s layers, Grumpy Kong himself emerges at the top.

• Climb or jump up: Reach his position and start attacking.
• Watch for his club swing: He’ll try to swat you away—Pauline will warn you with a shout ("Look out!"). When you hear this, drop down immediately.
• Strike when safe: Once his attack finishes, jump back up and keep punching until his health bar (purple) depletes.
