How To Break Paint Spikes in Clair Obscur Expedition 33
You've encountered those stubborn blue roots, also known as Paint Spikes, in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and you're right, you can't simply walk past them initially. These barriers require a specific ability to break, and that ability is tied to rescuing some lost children. Here's the breakdown of how to get through those Paint Spikes:
Clair Obscur Expedition 33: Break Paint Spikes
To destroy Paint Spikes, you'll need to unlock the Paint Break upgrade. This crucial ability is granted to you by Sastro after you successfully locate and bring back four of his lost Gestral kids.Sastro will make his first appearance at your camp shortly after your initial visit to the Gestral Village during the main storyline. However, actively helping him find his missing Gestral children is an optional side quest. Once you've rescued the required four kids, Sastro will teach you the Paint Break ability. After that, breaking Paint Spikes is as simple as hitting them with a regular melee attack.Finding the Lost Gestral Kids: Locations Revealed
Each time you reunite a lost Gestralwith Sastro at your camp, he'll reward your efforts with a new item. Ifyou're having trouble locating Sastro initially, from the clearing where you first meet The Curator, head left, then take another left into asmaller clearing. Keep in mind that Sastro might not appear until afteryou've encountered Esquie in the main story, and he might only show updefinitively after you rescue the first lost Gestral near the entranceto Esquie's Nest.
Here are the locations of the four essential Gestral kids you need to rescue to unlock the Paint Break ability:
1st Gestral Kid Location:This first lost Gestral is conveniently located right in front of Esquie’s Nest when you visit it during Act One. As part of the main story progression after exploring the Gestral Village, you'll naturally head to Esquie'sNest, making this little Gestral hard to miss. After speaking with them, they'll return to your camp, and this is also when Sastro will appearthere. To find Sastro at your camp, head left from The Curator’s caveand take another left when you reach the pond. You'll see Sastrostanding near a distinctive glowing blue tree. Your reward for thisfirst rescue is a new Gestral-themed haircut for Maelle.
2nd Gestral Kid Location:The second lost Gestral can be found just east of the Stone Wave Cliffs. From the entrance to the Stone Wave Cliffs area, follow the pathdownwards to the right. You'll need to defeat a Bourgeon and a few other enemies along the way to reach the Gestral, who will be waiting justoff to the right after the fight. If you've progressed to Act Three andhave Esquie's flying ability, you can bypass this fight entirely byflying to the Gestral's location. Your reward for finding this Gestralis a Gestral-themed haircut for Lune.
3rd Gestral Kid Location:The third lost Gestral is located on a small island near the White Tree area, which is west of the Gestral Village. To reach this island,you'll need Esquie’s swim ability, which you acquire at the end of ActOne. From the Gestral Village, head west towards Gestral Beach, swimacross the water gap, and then continue swimming northwest until youreach the White Tree island. Look for the Gestral in the section of theisland with seaweed-like plants; they'll be standing in front of somevases. Rescuing this Gestral will unlock a Gestral-themed haircut forSciel.
4th Gestral Kid Location:The fourth and final Gestral kid needed for the Paint Break ability is found shortly after the Forgotten Battlefield, right before you reach Monoco’s Station in Act Two. From Monoco’s Station, head downhill and keep to the leftside of the path. Look for a cluster of green trees where the snowy area transitions to grass. You'll spot the Gestral standing near some potsand broken crates in this area. Finding this fourth lost Gestral willfinally unlock the ability to break those pesky Paint Spikes!
Once you've rescued these four Gestral kids and spoken to Sastro at yourcamp after each rescue, you'll gain the Paint Break ability, allowingyou to explore previously inaccessible areas blocked by the blue rootsand uncover new secrets and treasures within Expedition 33.
