In the treacherous world of
Abiotic Factor, radiation is a constant and deadly threat. You'll not only have to navigate through contaminated areas and radioactive waste but also rely on alien meat and parts to survive, which often come with a heavy dose of radiation. If left unchecked, this can lead to severe sickness and even death, making radiation management a critical part of the game.
Abiotic Factor: How To Manage Radiation
This guide will break down the effects of radiation, how to treat it, and the different methods you can use to protect yourself.
Understanding Radiation Debuffs
Radiation exposure in
Abiotic Factor can be a constant issue, progressing through three stages of debuffs if left untreated. These debuffs are indicated near your Health Bar and in the Health Issues column of your menu.
Debuff | When It Occurs | Effect |
Radiation Tingle | Rad Absorption is over 6. | None. |
Radiation Sickness | Rad Absorption is over 35. | Causes Vomiting, which reduces Hunger and Thirst by 25% after each vomit. The effect is removed after vomiting twice, but can be reobtained. |
Irradiated | Rad Absorption is over 50. | Causes Vomiting, which reduces Hunger and Thirst by 25% after each vomit. The effect is removed after vomiting twice, but can be reobtained. |
The last two stages, in particular, can be lethal, especially if you are in combat. The vomiting animation leaves you vulnerable and unable to fight back, which can easily spell death in a solo run.
How to Deal with Radiation
1. Preventing Radiation Absorption
- Lead Vest: Early in the game, you can find a Lead Vest in Bio Lab D or on the catwalk leading to a Portal World on Level Three. This armor provides 5 armor and reduces incoming radiation while you wear it.
- Rad Resistance Buff: There are multiple ways to get the "Rad Resistance" buff, which provides a 50% resistance to all incoming radiation for several minutes. This buff is a great preventative measure.
2. Curing Radiation
There are several items and methods for removing radiation from your character once you've been exposed.
- Iodine Tablets: These are the earliest and most common way to treat radiation. They remove 10 radiation from your character and grant the Rad Resistance buff.
- Where to Find: Iodine Tablets have a high chance of spawning in every First Aid Kit. You can also find them on their own in locations like the Portal Entrance to A2 on Level Three.
- Pentetic Acid Syringes: These syringes provide the same effect as Iodine Tablets, removing 10radiation and granting the Rad Resistance buff. They are the firstrenewable source of radiation removal in the game.
- How to Craft: You can craft these syringes once you reach First Aid level 4. The required ingredients are easily found in various locations.
- Unlocking First Aid Level 4: You can level up your First Aid skill easily by starting with the Epimedical Bionomicist job, picking the First Aid Certified trait, or by simply crafting several bandages early in the game.
- Ingredients:
- Hydrochloric Acid: Found in Bio Lab D, Gym and Locker Room, Data Farms, and SupplyRooms in the Office Sector and Cascade Laboratories.
- Enethiol: Found in Bio Lab D, Gym and Locker Room, Supply Rooms, and Wooden Boxes in the Office Sector and Cascade Laboratories.
- Salt: Found in Bio Lab D, Kitchen and Break Room areas at Level Two and Three of the Office Sector, and Kitchen Cabinets at Cascade Laboratories.
- Metal Scrap: Found by breaking filing cabinets, drinking canned soda, dismantling metal vents, and killing Security Robots.
- Green Fish Liver: This is the second renewable method to cure radiation.
- How to Get: You must fish for Radfish in the radioactive waste found in areas like Manufacturing West.
- Crafting: After fishing up a Radfish, you can butcher it at a Chef's Counter to receive one Green Fish Liver, which has the same effect as an Iodine Tablet. You will also get two Rad Fish Fillets.
3. Using Food as a Preventative Measure
Rad Fish Fillets can be cooked into two different meals that provide the Rad Resistance buff while also restoring your hunger and thirst.
- Radfish Chowder
- Rad Rice Bowl
These food items are excellent as a preventative measure to reduce incomingradiation before entering a dangerous area. However, it's important toremember that they do not remove existing radiation from your character. For that, you will still need to rely on Iodine Tablets, Green Fish Liver, or Pentetic Acid Syringes.
