Sometimes, games can define a machine, such as Forza Horizon 5 or Crackdown 3.
They were Xbox exclusives, and those types of games help create an identity for a console. PlayStation (boo) have inFamous: Second Son and Ghost of Tsushima, whilst older machines are not exempt, with the Super Nintendo having Street Fighter II.
Of course, Street Fighter II has become a franchise, ported to many machines and as beloved on them as the original Nintendo. The same goes for Team 17’s battle game Worms, which started on the 16-bit Commodore Amiga. Such an interesting concept was never likely to be restricted to a single machine, and now Worms are everywhere.
As well as dedicated Worms games, the franchise has spawned all manner of spin-offs. There’s the puzzle game Worms Blast, much like Puzzle Bobble but with the Worms characters instead. The online slot games from
Gala Spins feature a title with the iconic branding named Worms Reloaded, which also has the weapons available in the original game featured on the reels. It even uses the same popular sound bites but doesn’t let you kill other people’s Worms! There’s even a loose
golfing sim named Worms Crazy Golf to keep fans of the series happy. Whilst all will be beloved by Worms fans; there’s nothing quite like the game’s core genre, the battleground game.
Here on Xbox, Worms fans are well catered for, with several titles spanning Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One and the current generation of consoles. All are derivative of the Amiga original and are great fun to play. If you’re an ageing gamer who remembers the 1995 classic, or a millennial wanting to discover the series for the first time, here are the titles to keep an eye out for.
Worms Ultimate Mayhem (Xbox 360)
Worms Ultimate Mayhem is a rerelease of Worms 4 Mayhem, but with better graphics. It is the second 3D version of the Worms games, following on from Worms 3D, released in 2004. Indeed, it even includes the mission segment from Worms 3D, making it the definitive version of the seventh-generation consoles. It included some customization options so that players could tailor their character’s appearance,
Worms WMD (Xbox One)
If you like your Worms experience to be authentic, you are best advised to find a copy of Worms WMD. It’s as close to the 2D experience of the 1995 original as you can get, although it does add some new ideas. Firstly, you can now craft your weapons by collecting creates or disassembling weapon parts, and you can once again enter buildings and use them as a base, as you could in Worms Forts: Under Siege from 2004.
IGN described this 2016 release as able to “hold its own next to bigger and more self-serious strategy games”, and that’s as much down to retaining its 2D roots as anything else.
Worms Rumble (Xbox One)
Worms Rumble was originally released for Xbox One but is also available on the Series X/S. It’s a little hectic, as instead of 2D or 3D, it is a 2.5D game based in real-time instead of turn-based. It’s a rework of the concept, but not enough to make it a different genre. It works well, and there are many different game options as one would expect from a current release. It even has cross-platform play, so if, for some reason, your friend has a PlayStation 5, you’re still going to be able to compete.
