>> Such an honor having you on the show.
Is there anything that you want our viewers,
our fans to know?
Was there anything that we should keep an eye out for?
>> Oh yeah, I got a new album dropping the beginning of next year
>> Yo, what?
>> You like what? Album drop?
>> What is up, family? Welcome to Xbox Live sessions.
I'm your host Trey Ace Smith.
This is a gaming talk show where we invite
all types of phenomenal people to come hang,
come play, and just have a great, great time.
Joining us today is Los Angeles Rams running back and
2017 NFL Offensive Player of the Year.
My boy, Todd Gurley.
My guy, how are you doing today?
>> I'm doing great, man. How are you doing?
>> I'm excited, man. This is like the first time
I'm in this environment.
I get to meet an awesome person like yourself.
Yeah man, I'm in a place right now where I'm my like,
"Oh, the energy, the energy is hitting me in the face.
It's just like we're doing this."
>> We are definitely doing this.
>> Going down.
>> So, you are literally one of the best football players
of the game, and I'm really curious to see how your skills
on the field reflect your skills on the screen.
You know what I'm saying? Have you played Madden here and there?
>> Yeah, I play here and there, I play here and there.
I'm definitely better on the field than I am in a video game,
which I think it should be like that in real life.
>> All right, Todd, so before we get things started man,
I'm actually very, very interested.
I want to hear from you in
just this energy, you and your
team and the organization. What is that like?
Like being in this part of the season,
what is this like?
How does that feel?
>> It's been good, man, just having a season we'd been having.
>> Straight up.
>> Starts with Coach McVay
and Mr. Kroenke it's a great organization to play for.
Lots of good teammates,
we're altogether, all family.
So, love those guys, just having a good time out there
balling and there's nothing like getting the taste of success.
>> You want to keep going at it,
and so it's been a fun all year though.
>> I love what you said man, the family.
Just in life in general, it's really
the people that you keep close,
that bond, that relationship that you
have. Your warriors to your left,
your warriors to your right, the people that have your back.
So, that's awesome to hear, man.
I'm really glad. You guys have been tearing it up and it's awesome.
>> Yeah, I appreciate it.
Yeah, we'll just hang out at the facility, we're always together.
off the field and stuff like that.
>> It's not just at work then.
>> All right, Todd, so we'll talk more about that in a little bit,
but right now, I want to pivot to the other reason we
are here and that is for Madden NFL 19.
You had been having
an incredible MVP caliber season,
and in this point in the season, things are really,
really, really, really start to heat up.
I would imagine for you,
you know better than anybody else, but it seems like it's really,
really go time right now.
So I'm curious.
Have you had a lot of time to mess around on that at all?
Have you had time to play?
>> No, not too much, I still play here and there.
Obviously, you gave me a new idea.
So every team we'll lose to, I'm just go
and play them right there in Madden,
so that made me feel better.
>> Yeah, I heard that.
>> [inaudible] I didn't do.
>> That's actually a really, really good idea.
Do you find that,
and I know it's a game,
but do you find that when you do play,
are you seeing new things,
are you seeing the same things? How does that
compare to what you see on the field?
>> No, because it's different for us.
>> We're a top offense, so
we study against these teams and what would come out there,
they don't run nothing.
They ran the last previous 10, 11, 12 games.
>> Make sense.
>> Sometimes we have to adjust and
just have some adjustments on the field, right off the field.
It's definitely a lot difficult for us,
but we're adjusting and able to play our game.
>> Yeah. I heard that some of the guys in the NFL
actually have consoles in their lockers. Is that true?
>> No, we don't take it that far.
>> Not that far. I haven't seen that one.
>> Is that just you or do some guys?
>> We just moved here, so we don't
have a permanent place. So usually, like
where did you get that setup there, have the whole lounge
and have all the game
systems in there and guys be playing on break,
stuff like that, camp.
But some guys definitely
bring their gaming system on the road for sure.
>> Especially when we have to go to the
East Coast for a two-day trip.
>> So, when you game, man, and
I've definitely had
my fair share being triggered in games.
Is there any pet peeves, like is there anything that when you
game that's just like really tests your mind?
>> No, just with somebody.
If I got the headphones on, somebody just talking trash.
Because I do the exact same thing so I
know that's going to make me mad,
so I try doing the exact same thing and if I'm losing.
>> Yeah, losing and talking trash, I get it.
Aside from gaming, is there any pet peeves that you have,
in real life, when you experience it,
it just drives you crazy?
>> Probably this LA traffic, like mid day.
I'd just won't even bother I just stay home and wait to about
>> I heard that.
All right Todd, it's that time to get to business, man.
>> Let's get it.
>> So, I have a challenge for you.
We going to play a game of Madden.
You're going to be Rams,
I'm going to be the Dallas Cowboys,
and if you win,
you get this custom Xbox.
>> I think I'm going to take that either way, win or loss.
>> I don't know about that, man.
I'm not going be an easy opponent, you know what I'm saying?
>> Who else are you going to give an Xbox
to with my name up there?
>> Man, I'm sure there's lots of people that would love that.
>> Yeah, that's very true, very true.
>> But if you win, this is all yours.
>> That's mine then.
>> It's yours either way.
>> Let's see how it pans out.
>> All right, let's get it.
>> You can't angle that up, can you? Let's see.
>> You know I know what you're doing.
>> Oh, snaps. Get the ball.
>> So way.
>> I gave you good field positions too.
>> When you play Madden, do you always pick the Rams?
>> Yeah, sometimes.
>> What do you mean sometimes?
You've been picking other teams and whatnot?
>> Man, sometimes I get beaten
sometimes, you got to switch it up.
You would run with Zeke.
>> Don't let me score off of that.
>> Pause, my bad.
I say I forgot you had Z,
I'm tripping, you going to run the ball all game.
>> Let's get down to them. The gamer
is about to come out of you right now.
Let me go ahead and beat the breaks off this dude real quick.
>> Who are your receivers?
Oh yeah, it's over with.
It's over, come on AD.
>> Oh no, 99 saving the day.
>> The funny thing, you literally
know every one of these people on a personal level, don't you?
>> Yeah, I sure do.
>> That is ridiculous.
>> You got something right here though.
>> Still going to beat you.
There we go. See, that's what I was trying to do.
>> I got something for you right here.
>> You got something for me?
We're going to see. There we go. Let's see what my boys got.
>> There you go lead.
So Todd, I want to know a little bit more about you, man.
So, before the NFL,
where did you grow up, where's home for you?
>> Home for me is North Carolina.
Tarboro, North Carolina.
I was originally born in Baltimore,
all my family is there, but I grew up in North Carolina,
little small town called Tarboro, about 10,000 people.
You will miss.
>> You think so?
>> Let's go. Let's go.
>> He blocks the kick?
So Todd, did you always know that you wanted to play football
or was there a defining moment in your life that was like,
all right, this is what I want to do?
>> I mean, I always loved the game.
I always play, but I didn't really know.
I was just playing because everybody else was playing.
If you wasn't playing football, then you were just at the house
or not doing anything, trouble somewhere.
>> You were just playing with all the hommies and the friends.
>> We're just out there just having fun.
I didn't really realize or see the bigger picture
until after my freshman year in college, after my freshman season.
I'm like maybe this could be a real thing.
You start hearing stuff. Then I had a good year,
so I'm just like, I know I can compete
even on a higher level.
>> That's a beautiful thing, man.
That's a really, really beautiful thing.
Let's see how my boys.
>> What have we got?
>> This thing is off, is it whatnot?
>> Formation, you know I'm eye formation type of guy.
>> I will let you run one play and then I got a question for you.
>> All right, let's go.
>> All right, let me see.
Let me see what they actually have here.
>> I think I have the Migos playing all that.
>> Dude, the music in this game is so good.
>> Yeah, it's sick.
>> I couldn't believe it. My boy is literally-
>> It is over. It's over.
Damn. I need to use the stiff arm.
>> That was just such an interesting moment for me,
seeing you run with yourself like that was-
>> Yeah, it was pretty sweet, wasn't it?
>> I was like-
wait, what is happening now?
>> I was tired, time running must have gotten him tired.
>> All right. So, unfortunately, my boy just got a 20 yard gain.
I basically took him down, so all good.
But that makes me ask a question.
What's the hardest hit you've ever taken?
>> Hardest hit I have ever taken?
>> The hardest out of all your career life.
When you think of a hit,
what's one moment that resonates with you?
>> Oh, when I got hit pretty hard in Detroit.
I still remember that one but,
oh no, it's not like any one of that I kind of remember.
I know back when I played Alabama one time in college,
my freshman year at practice,
probably it was a practice, honestly.
It probably was a practice.
>> Oh, no.
>> To the house.
>> Get him Goff.
>> To the house.
>> What are you doing?
>> To the house. Give me that. Give me that.
>> I was trying to pass the ball, man.
I knew I should have just ran it.
See, I'm not a quarter back.
That's why I'm not a quarterback player.
>> All right, Todd. I feel like I just had my highlight just now.
>> You know what I am saying? But I want to know from you man,
is there a particular highlight moment that you experienced?
>> I'm just more like making pro ball,
my work year going into the pro ball,
>> Got you.
>> and a while like always seeing that growing up
and being able to play with all types of guys.
You better snap the ball right now. Oh.
>> I say like Offensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year,
that stuff, to be able to win that-
>> - with the guys is in
this league and will be considered the best.
>> Yeah. That's awesome, man.
>> It's cool.
>> Proud of you, bro. Good for you.
I'm throwing the X by the way, just so you know.
>> How are you going to roll?
That is the worst quarter back rule ever.
Coach literally saying, "Do not go to the opposite
side of the field", and he still scored.
But you aint going to get this though.
>> There we go.
>> My field goal kicking in this game, bro. Oh my gosh.
>> That's going to cost you the game.
>> Are you going to run that back?
>> So Todd, what was it like when you
transitioned from college to the NFL? What was that like?
>> I guess for me it was different because I was coming off ACL.
>> Oh, wow.
>> I left college.
I didn't do the combine or pro day nothing like that,
so it was just me trying to get back and just trying to make sure,
not really prove but just prove that I belong in
this league and I can still compete at a high level, even just
coming back from a knee surgery.
The comeback, the second game of the year had like six carries,
but it was cool. It was a smooth transition.
Obviously, I felt like I'm biased for planning the SEC.
I felt like they helped me.
>> It's really the same guys who played in college, honestly.
Everybody is just as fast as you, as strong as you, athletic,
so you're not really going to get away with too
much athletic abilities. Football, for me, is
really the ultimate team sport because you need 11.
If 10 people do the right thing but one person don't,
it will just mess up everything.
>> Okay, yeah.
>> Come on, boy.
>> Okay, he's Todd Gurley. Take him down.
So my boy, how are you liking Los Angeles?
What's this city like to you?
>> I love it, man. This is nice.
The weather, you can't beat it. Definitely different,
the vibe is different, everything
is different just living out here.
>> I like it.
>> Nice. Have you had a chance to, I mean,
I'm sure you have but have you hit like
any spots that you love, like any favorite restaurant?
>> Yeah, for sure. For sure.
When I first got here I fell in love with Mastro.
>> Oh, let's go.
>> Oh my gosh, I gave up another one.
>> Come on now. Come on now, Todd. Come on now, man.
>> That why I don't pass the ball right there.
Oh man. All right.
I always played defense growing up anyway
so this is what I do. So, I'm going to just-
>> So, you like steak?
>> No. I don't really eat beef like that.
>> Yeah. I don't really eat beef like that.
>> If you had to pick one.
>> I love sea food.
>> Seafood. I was trying to ask a question that like-
>> I already knew you were getting there, like no,
I love seafood though.
>> Seafood. Nice. So you like sushi?
>> Yeah. Especially, I didn't really liked sushi like that
a little bit in college. But once I got out
here, it was a new brand.
>> Yeah, for sure.
>> I know you can't go. You might not
go for a field goal because you are going to miss it.
>> I probably will. That's the thing.
I really probably will.
I've got nine, eight seconds to make it.
That's so good.
How are you getting that close to blocking that? I don't get that.
>> I jumped with it. I should have just run through,
man. Beat me again.
>> Todd Gurley, everyone. So, where
do you typically spend your off-season?
>> I'll be out here in LA. Most of the time or
just traveling and just on a vacation.
I go to Miami,
Atlanta, you know, all different types.
>> So, my boy has a favorite vacation spot?
>> Yeah. I got my little spot and in Cancun.
>> I cannot give out the location though.
>> Nice. Yeah I know.
>> For sure.
>> I do not think I have ever been there before.
>> It's cool. When I go one place, I just keep going.
I need to expand and go like Cabo,
you know, something different.
But I like what I like.
>> I was going to say, yeah, you like you like, man.
I got to make it out there.
I have been hearing really cool things about there.
>> Yeah, it's cool.
>> This is game right here.
>> I know I'm going to.
>> This is game.
>> At least my boy, Todd,
caught the ball. You know what I'm saying?
At least he has hands.
You know what I am saying?
>> Depressing right now. In fact, this is not good.
>> All right. I need to have two people on Z.
He trying to go on line on me.
>> Bring out the big guns.
>> Oh no.
>> Get up. Get up.
>> Touch him. Touch him. No.
>> Get up, man.
>> Come on, AD.
I told you, it ain't never over until it's over.
>> It's not. You're right.
It's definitely not over. All right.
>> Get up, get up, boy. Get up, boy.
>> You better make this tackle.
See, that's just bad football right there.
Just turning the ball over,
then give them a touchdown.
>> So, Todd, transitioning from St. Louis to LA,
what has been the biggest change would you say?
>> Obviously, it's the biggest, like a biggest city,
there's always something going on out here in LA.
Obviously, I miss the food,
I definitely missed the food out there in St. Louis
for sure. But LA,
you got two basketball teams,
two football teams, two baseball teams,
two hockey teams, so
it's just like always something going on, so it's cool.
All my friends, when they come out here
they don't want to leave, so
>> Love that.
>> But it was cool out there in St. Louis as well, too.
>> I'm more low key, but we had a good time out there as well.
>> Awesome, love that, man.
>> You're going for it, too?
>> Obviously, I got to go for it.
>> You better not come to this left side.
Your running to it. Get off the block.
[inaudible] you really just did that?
I've never seen anybody do that in Madden, for real.
Yeah, I'm bad you all.
>> All right, let's see,
let's see how my boy finishes.
I think you are going to throw another interception.
>> I thought I was a beast in Madden, man.
>> So, what is that like,
being able to control literally you in a video game?
That's the craziest thing ever.
>> I mean, it is pretty weird I guess.
It is pretty weird to be able to just like try to
run yourself to death or just play with your teammates and stuff
>> That you have been playing with for years.
>> That's trippy, man.
You know that's mine. Give me that,
user pick all day long, it's in the house.
>> This game taught me a lesson.
Don't throw the ball, basically. That's what it taught me.
>> You think I'm going to score again?
>> You don't think I'm going to score again?
>> There's no defense,
I mean your offense is like
>> It's doing great.
>> Yeah, it's doing all right, but it's not
like you won't turn the ball over,
but won't get nowhere either,
so that was like
>> Interesting. Got it.
>> You get enough to be on field goal position.
>> They let Cole Beasley score?
Now you know he cannot do that in real life.
>> I'm going to block you.
>> You see how he stopped right there.
>> Why? That's interesting.
>> I don't know, I think I might have pushed the wrong button.
>> So, we got a new stadium coming, man.
I can imagine how fire that must be.
Does my boy know anything about the stadium that he could give us?
Do you know anything at all regarding that?
>> It's going to be cool, man.
Obviously, we got a chance to go see the stadium.
So, just being able to go in there,
see the whole structure.
It's going to be pretty dope, for sure.
>> Love that.
>> It's going to be great. it's going to be right in
the middle of Inglewood or something.
Obviously, we've seen it flying over LAX and stuff like that,
so it's going to be a good stadium.
>> Fire, man.
>> It's going to be the best one, for sure.
>> All right, let's give him a challenge.
>> You did say you were going to score?
Oh, you're going to me like that?
>> I mean. I'll give you a chance to put some points on the board.
>> I appreciate that, man.
>> You know what I'm saying, like I
don't want to be disrespectful.
>> Let me get in a gun and do something.
I think this is going to be my first good play right here.
Let's go, come on. Get lined up, let's go, hut.
>> Listen to the house.
>> Hook and ladder. It's over with.
>> What do you think Jared Goff would say about your performance?
>> I think he'll man up and I say he lost the game for us,
and her should have gave me the ball,
a little more [inaudible].
>> Right, yeah. So hey,
man we went back and forth,
we rumbled, we had a great game, but you are right,
who else am I going to give this console to, so
>> I appreciate that, man.
>> All you, my brother.
>> You came to LA, beat me,
zero on the board and still give me an Xbox.
>> We're not worried about winning.
>> Most generous Madden player ever.
>> So, I believe the last Rams
player to grace the cover of Madden
NFL was your boy Marshall Faulk.
What would that mean to you,
like how would that feel being on the cover of Madden?
>> Yeah, that'd be pretty dope.
I've mean, obviously, the last round you do it,
like you said it was a running back,
so why not [inaudible].
That's kind of been the goal, low key.
You always see yourself like trying to
get on that cover of Madden growing up playing the games.
If I could get that, it would mean a lot.
>> That'd be pretty cool.
>> I would say you're pretty deserving of it,
so I look forward to that being the future.
>> I appreciate it, yeah, you got to keep putting in the work.
You're not just going to get it off no one or two good seasons,
you got to be constantly good and keep putting in that work.
>> You of all people know about a disciplined work ethic.
So, I believe in you wholeheartedly, man.
>> I appreciate that, man.
>> Absolutely. Is there anything that
you want our viewers and our fans to know?
Is there anything that we should keep an eye out for?
>> Yeah, I got an album dropping in the beginning of next year, no,
I'm just messing with you.
>> You know me bro, your boy's a producer. I'm like, Yo what?
>> You were like, what, album dropping? No.
>> That is awesome.
>> I got no album dropping,
I'm just messing with you.
Nothing going on, just trying to keep playing these games and
then hopefully get to the main game.
>> Awesome. Blessings on your journey, buddy.
>> Appreciate it, man.
>> Thank you so much for everything.
>> I appreciate you.
>> Thank you, Todd.
