How to reduce stuttering and lag in Soulmask

We've made a guide where we'll tell you How to Reduce Stuttering and Lag in Soulmask.
Soulmask received some pretty positive reviews, but it also had some notable performance complaints. In this guide, I'll cover the minimum and recommended hardware your PC should run, present my benchmarks and specs, and give you some hygienic setup suggestions. I hope it helps you get every last frame out of it.

How to Reduce Stuttering and Lag in Soulmask

First, let's take a look at the minimum and recommended specs for this game listed on the store page.
Minimum Specs:
  • Windows 10 (64-bit)
  • Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 3 3300X
  • 16GB RAM
  • 4GB GTX 970 or 4GB AMD RX 580
Recommended Specs
  • Windows 11
  • Intel Core i7-9700 or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
  • 24GB RAM
  • RTX 3060 or AMD 6700XT
  • SSD (marked as "highly recommended")

A good starting point to ensure the best performance is therefore to have at least one set of these specs. However, in this game, it is possible to get a very stable and consistent 60 frames per second at the start of the game, even at the graphics level. Of course, this can change due to the large number of NPCs you will collect in the future. By having an RTX 3060, 32GB of RAM and an SSD. This means that the game is GPU-heavy, so a lot of its performance relies on having a good GPU, plenty of fast RAM, and an SSD to run it.

Soulmask Graphics Settings Tips

I'll go over some of the settings listed above and break down a few to make it clearer which settings are best suited to your setup. There are many reasons to use borderless windows instead of a dedicated fullscreen mode in any game, but the simple fact is that using a dedicated fullscreen mode will positively impact your performance. This is because in fullscreen mode, many background processes on your computer are suspended because they don't need to be displayed directly, but in borderless mode, all background processes still run normally.

You should stick to your monitor's native resolution here; and if you plan on scaling using DLSS or FSR, this will be discussed later. You can use any of the settings the game provides, but as with all settings, these are just simple controls that help determine the hardware you're using. They can't take into account background resource usage, any recording software, or 73 browser tabs. If you run a lot of things in the background while gaming, it's best to set it to a value slightly lower than recommended. Since the next section of settings can vary depending on the hardware you're using, I'll discuss whether each setting has a big or small impact. Darkness - strong influence

  • Antialiasing: Very Effective
  • View Distance: Strong Impact
  • Texture: Low/High Impact (Highly GPU dependent)
  • Visual Effects: Low/High Impact (Highly CPU dependent)
  • Post-Processing Effects: Low Impact
  • Leaf Quality: High Impact
  • Motion Blur: Low Impact
  • Depth of Field: Low Impact
  • Highlight Shadow: Low/High Impact (GPU dependent)

Vertical Sync and Frame Rate Limiting are two really important issues to consider if you're having a lot of stuttering issues. V-Sync is designed to lock games to your monitor's refresh rate, and turning them on or off incorrectly can lead to stuttering and some vision issues. If you're using a monitor with a 60Hz refresh rate, and you're consistently getting over 60 frames per second, you should enable this setting.

If you're using a monitor with a 120Hz refresh rate but consistently get less than 120fps, disable this setting and then lock the frame rate to get closer to the desired value, even if it's 60 or 90 frames per second? Monday. Also note that in both cases you may want to lock the frame rate to a level your system can reach. In my case, Vsync was enabled for the sake of the display and because I was often going over 60fps. DLSS and FSR

NVidia's DLSS and AMD's FSR are incredibly complex technologies that I don't really understand, but I've learned that they're not the magic buttons they're sometimes made out to be. DLSS can do something called upscaling, where it takes the native resolution and uses deep learning AI to make your game look like it's running at a higher resolution.

For example, you can run the game at 1080p, but DLSS will try to make it look like you're running it at 1440p. This is great for visuals, but can also be used to dramatically (and I mean A LOT) boost your performance. The Quality setting will yield less benefit but better visuals, while the Performance setting will yield much better performance but significantly worse visuals, so experiment with this to find out. Note, however, that DLSS is only available on NVidia 20-series GPUs and doesn't work at all on AMD GPUs.

FSR is about the same, however, one notable advantage is that it's available for a wider variety of GPUs. This even includes NVidia 9- and 10-series GPUs, giving them a huge new lease of life. Unfortunately, this game doesn't seem to use FSR 3.0, which is useless frame-churning nonsense that drives people crazy. Mask of the Soul stuttered.

My first experience of stuttering in Mask of the Soul was in the first cutscene, which was absolutely terrible. What's interesting is that while short-term glitches still exist in the game, they go away relatively quickly. It turns out that this is because the runtime doesn't allow for shader precompilation, resulting in crashes in the early moments of a gaming session. Of course, the length of this freeze will depend on your hardware, but unfortunately, unless CampFire Studio adds some of these features in a patch, they could last for a while. You can try to reduce the severity of this stuttering by changing the game's settings, closing some background programs, and running the game in full-screen mode only. We hope that this guide has helped you understand some of the graphics settings and terminology, and helped you improve those shots and reduce stuttering.
