The
Engineer stands out among the roster of survivors in
Risk of Rain 2 as the definitive master of area denial and passive damage. Known for his ability to deploy powerful, automated machinery and defensive shields, the Engineer offers a more strategic, less frantic playstyle compared to other characters. Unlocking this tactical powerhouse is one of the simpler objectives in the game, focusing primarily on persistent exploration. This guide details the straightforward requirements for adding the Engineer to your team, and more importantly, provides a deep dive into his unique, item-inheriting skillset. Understanding how to deploy his signature turrets and mines is essential to transforming the battlefield into a personalized fortress.
How to Unlock the Engineer Survivor
Fortunately, the path to unlocking the Engineer is one of persistence rather than luck or complex prerequisites.
The Stage Clearance Requirement
The requirement for obtaining the Engineer is simply based on cumulative progression through the game's stages:
- Objective: You must successfully clear 30 different stages in Risk of Rain 2.
- Cumulative Progress: This progression is not tied to a single life. If your run ends prematurely, the progress you made in that attempt—the number of stages cleared—is saved.
- Persistence Pays: You can pick up where you left off in subsequent runs. If you clear 5stages in one run and 10 in the next, your total count stands at 15.Once the cumulative total hits 30, the Engineer will be unlockedautomatically.
Flexibility Advantage: Because this objective is so general, you can focus on unlocking othersurvivors or completing different challenges along the way withouthindering your progress toward the Engineer. For instance, pursuing theArtificer via the Lunar Portal can easily contribute to your stagecount.
II. The Engineer's Core Abilities (The Mechanical Arsenal)
The Engineer's gameplay revolves entirely around setting up and maintaining his machinery. His most unique feature is that his Special ability turrets inherit all of the items he collects, making item selection critically important for this character.
Primary Skill: Bouncing Grenades
Ability: The Engineer charges up and fires a volley of up to eight different grenades.
Damage: Each grenade deals 100% damage to enemies.
Playstyle: A reliable, wide-area damage source that benefits from crowd control and area-of-effect items.
Secondary Skills: Mine Deployment
The Engineer can choose between two different types of deployable mines for area denial.
- Pressure Mines:
- Deployment: Places up to four two-stage mines.
- Damage: Deals 300% damage when enemies step on them.
- Charged Damage: When fully charged up (after a brief delay), the mines can deal massive 900% damage.
- Spider Mines (Alternate):
- Deployment: Places up to four mines.
- Damage: Deals up to 600% damage when enemies approach.
- Playstyle: The primary difference is the trigger mechanism: Pressure Mines arepressure-activated, while Spider Mines are proximity-triggered and willchase nearby enemies.
Utility Skills: Defense and Offense
This slot provides a choice between a defensive barrier and an aggressive projectile attack.
- Bubble Shield:
- Effect: Conjures a large, dome-shaped barrier that blocks all incoming damage (projectiles, lasers, etc.) for up to 15 seconds.
- Limitation: Only one can be active at a time, and enemies (and players) can stillwalk freely inside the barrier. Ideal for protecting turrets or securing a teleporter charging zone.
- Thermal Harpoons (Alternate):
- Effect: The Engineer enters a target painting mode and launches up to four heat-seeking harpoons.
- Damage: Each harpoon deals 500% damage.
- Playstyle: Provides a high-damage, lock-on attack for dealing with threats outside the turret's immediate range.
Special Skills: The Item-Inheriting Turrets (Crucial)
The Engineer's entire strategy revolves around his ability to place automated turrets that inherit his item stack.
- TR12 Gauss Auto-Turret:
- Deployment: Places up to two stationary turrets.
- Damage: Each turret fires projectiles dealing 100% damage.
- Feature: Inherits all collected items. These turrets will apply On-Hit effects, gain critical strike chance, and benefit from every single item the Engineer possesses.
- TR58 Carbonizer Turret (Alternate):
- Deployment: Places two mobile turrets (can follow the Engineer).
- Damage: Fires lasers dealing 200% damage and slowing enemies down.
- Feature: Also inherits all collected items. The choice here is between the raw damage potential and superiorrange/rate of fire of the Gauss Turret versus the added mobility andslowing effect of the Carbonizer.
Mastering the Engineer means focusing item acquisition on On-Hit effects (e.g., AtG Missile Mk. 1, Ukulele), damage multipliers (e.g., Lens-Maker's Glasses), and healing (e.g., Bustling Fungus) to maximize the automated devastation delivered by the turrets.
