Unlike traditional Pokémon games where you need a specific Hidden Machine (HM), the method in Pokémon Legends Z-A is more dynamic and integrated into battle. To destroy those pesky boulders, you need to hit them with a high-impact physical move.While powerful attacks like Iron Tail or Rollout will do the trick later on, the very first and most reliable move you'll get for the job is the classic Rock Smash.

Your Early-Game Rock Smasher: Meet Bunnelby

So, how do you get Rock Smash? The game sets you up for success right from the beginning. During the early tutorial quest, "A New Life in Lumiose City," you'll be asked to catch five different Pokémon species in Wild Area 1.One of the most common Pokémon you'll find there is Bunnelby. Not only is it easy to catch, but it's also the perfect candidate to become your dedicated rock-breaker. Be sure to add one to your team early!

How to Get the Rock Smash TM

You won't have to wait long to get your hands on this essential move. After completing the catching tutorial in Wild Area 1, you'll be directed tothe Pokémon Research Lab. There, a character named Mable will reward you for assisting with her survey.

Your prize for helping her with the Wild Area 1 research? The Technical Machine (TM) for Rock Smash. It’s given to you directly, so you can’t miss it!

Putting It All Together: A Step-by-Step Smash Guide

Once you have the TM, follow these simple steps to clear your path:

Teach the Move: Open your menu and navigate to your Satchel. Find the Rock Smash TM in your inventory and select "Use this item."Then, simply choose your Bunnelby (or another compatible Pokémon) toteach it the move.

Approach the Boulder: Walk right up to the obstructive rock you want to destroy.

Send Out Your Pokémon: Use the directional buttons to send your Bunnelby out into the field near the boulder.

Aim and Command: Hold down the ZL button to aim and highlight the boulder. A command prompt will appear—press A to order your Pokémon to use Rock Smash.
