We hope you are ready for this, because today we are going to tell you how to configure a dedicated server in Valheim.

What is the dedicated server in Valheim?

This is one of the ways you have to play cooperatively, and if you wonder how to configure a dedicated server, the game has a very little detailed way that will allow you to do it, that's why here we will be covering everything you need to know about how configure a dedicated server on Valheim.

How to configure a dedicated server in Valheim?

As we already mentioned, the game does not cover the process of how to configure a dedicated server well, so we divide it into several parts so that you can understand them much better.

How to configure a dedicated server in Valheim? - Application

The first way is by using the game's independent dedicated server application, which can be used by all players.

In order to use it, you will have to access Steam> Library> select the game to find the dedicated server application, which weighs approximately 1GB. What you have to do is download the application, but if you cannot find it, you will have to have selected the "Tools" filter in your Steam library.

Once the application is installed, you will have to access it to turn your computer into a game server that you can buy both with your friends and with the rest of the players.

But before starting your server, you will have to open the dedicated server installation folder, to access the file you need to modify, so go to Program Files (x86)> Steam> steamapps> common> dedicated server. If you have modified the location of your games on Steam, you will have to access the drive you used, select the Steam folder and follow the previous path.

The next step in the process is to edit the "start_headless_server.bat" file in Notepad to avoid server problems.

To do this, you will have to find the file "start_headless_server.bat" or "start_server.sh" in Linux> make sure to save a copy of this file in another folder, before doing anything with it. Please note, that changes to the file within the dedicated server installation folder will be reset every time you update the application on Steam.

Right click on the file "start_headless_server.bat"> Edit to open the file in Notepad.

If you are a Linux user, you will have to access a terminal in the server directory and run the bash script: "./start_server.sh"

When you open the file you will have to look for line 7 of "start valheim_server ...", which has all the properties that you can adjust so that the dedicated server works without problems. Although you can also search for "start valheim_server".

The properties that you can modify are:

Name "My server", although you can use the name you want, as long as you avoid duplicate words or muldial name.

Port 2456, is the default, although you can use your router's port, for which you will have to log in to your router> Port Forwarding settings, making sure the port is open in your firewall.

World "Dedicated", corresponds to the name of the world and that you can configure as you wish.

Password "Secret", if you want a private server, set a password, if not, you can leave this field empty to leave it open.

Once the configuration is done, you will have to save and create a duplicate as a backup (believe me, creating a duplicate can save your life in games, applications and other services) and that you will save in another location.

Configuration and backup ready, it is time to access the application from your PC or within Steam until it loads "Game server connected", indicating that your server is active and running. But if you want to turn it off, you can press any key or Enter key in Linux within the command prompt window. Although the servers should never be turned off, if at any point you want to do so, don't panic because you will already know how.

Remember that you can use your server while it is running in the background and within it, you can use the following administrator commands:

  • help: displays all available commands.
  • ping: ping the server to get its latency.
  • kick [name / ip / userid], this command will allow you to kick a user.
  • ban [name / ip / user ID]], this command will allow you to ban a user.
  • Banned - displays a list of currently banned users.
  • unban [ip / userID]], this command will allow you to unban a user.
  • info - Print system information

That is all you have to know about how to configure a dedicated server in Valheim, we hope that with all these tools, you can start your server, just remember to follow step by step so that everything goes smoothly.
