The first thing you need to do if you are interested in how to change  character is to go to the Pirate Emporium and talk to the merchant named Eduardo to learn about his products > click on the Pirate tab at the top of the screen > which will allow you to access a pirate appearance potion, with which you can change the appearance of a pirate without having to lose progress.
