How to make a flight plan in Microsoft Flight Simulator?

One of the main reasons why you should make a flight plan is because it will mark the route to take, from point A to point B quickly and efficiently. If you simply want to fly aimlessly, it is not really necessary to do so, but if you already have a specific place to land, a planning stage is required.

Now to know how to make a flight plan, the first thing you should do is go to the World Map from the Welcome Menu. Select your aircraft first so your range is displayed on the map and don't risk choosing an airport too far from your departure.

Then you have to select an airport "From" and one "To" (You can click on the boxes and scroll, write the name of the city or the ICAO code).

You can also left-click directly on an airport on the map and then select "set as departure" and "set as destination".

From the drop-down menus below your departure airport, you will be able to select the runway, gate, or parking deck from which you want to start. Simply select the runway and your flight will begin immediately.

If you select a gate or parking deck, you will need to perform the cold and dark starting procedure. You can make the same selection from the menu below your arrival airport.

In Microsoft Flight Simulator many things have to be specified with respect to the flight, just like in real life, so naturally how to make a flight plan becomes a real process.

Just below the icon of the selected aircraft a menu will appear that will give you the option to select a direct GPS heading that refers to a straight line and it is recommended to only use it in strictly short flights. Also a VOR-to-VOR visual route that will guide you through a series of waypoints and two types of instrument routes: low-altitude airways and high-altitude airways.

Those are pretty self explanatory and you should probably use them if you plan to use autopilot to navigate Microsoft Flight Simulator.

It is important to emphasize that low-altitude airways are best for smaller aircraft and short-range travel with all aircraft, while high-altitude airways are best for long-range flights.

On the other hand, selecting high altitude airways is not recommended if you are flying something like a Cessna, because you just don't have the power to go 40,000 feet. They are suitable for commercial aircraft and commercial aircraft.

Once you select your airway type, Microsoft Flight Simulator will automatically select a route. Followed by this, you will see that under your departure airport, a new drop-down menu has appeared. You must use it to select your exit route. You should choose one that corresponds to the track you want and ideally in the right direction to save fuel.

Below your arrival airport you have two selections to make, which are your arrival route and your final approach, which must coincide with the runway you wish to land on and the type of approach equipment to use.

After doing the above, you can click Navigation Log to view each waypoint and change your cruising altitude if you wish. It is not recommended to select a cruising altitude that your aircraft may have difficulty reaching.

You can select on any landmark to remove it. You can also do the same in "Open Filters" at the bottom and scroll down to change "Navigation Aids" and "RNAV and Fixed Position Report" to show more waypoints on the map.

Once you press “FLY”, the flight plan will automatically load into your flight computer and you have completed the entire process of how to make a flight plan in the game.

Now that you know the whole process of how to make a flight plan in Microsoft Flight Simulator, you will be able to do it with greater precision so that the modifications and choices you make are appropriate for your flight.
