Android is an operating system used by billions of people around the world, it is even believed that the number of people using Android is greater than that used by iOS. The number of people with Android has to meet certain needs with the use of their mobile device, so applications are necessary, and in front of such a large number of users, developers around the world who seek to have the most downloads for their applications are many.

One of these developers is called "DO Global", who has created a series of applications that if we add all the downloads of them, gives us a total of more than 90 million downloads.

90 million downloads is a number that many developers would like to add, but at what price is achieved and for what reason.

Six popular applications of this developer have been accused of "fraudulently clicking on ads," in addition to requiring a "suspiciously large number of permissions, or permits considered potentially 'dangerous' by Android," security firm Check has said. Point and Method of intelligence of the media.

But not only Check Point has been given the task of researching these applications, a few days ago BuzzFeed News has been in the task of researching and showed the results that show that "Google Play Store is being exploited by developers who easily hide who are the users, offer applications with invasive permissions and use these permissions to send ads.

Apps with suspiciously large number of permissions

The applications that are in the eye of the hurricane are:

- Selfie Camera, which has more than 50 million downloads approximately.

- Total Cleaner, has more than 10 million downloads approximately.

- Smart Cooler, has more than 10 million downloads approximately.

- RAM Master, has more than 10 million downloads approximately.

- AIO Flashlight, has more than 1 million downloads approximately.

- Omni Cleaner, has more than 10 million downloads approximately.

According to BuzzFeed News, the security firm Check Point would have obtained that the Selfie Camera application in particular contained "a code that causes it to click fraudulently on the ads of the application without the knowledge of the user".

But allegedly the application also clicks fraudulently in ad even when the application was closed.

The leader of the analysis and response team of Check Point, Aviran Hazum, said that this behavior could exhaust the battery life of Android users and of course, being ads that require an Internet connection, they also consume the data.

In addition, a large number of ads also collect data when a user clicks on them, which, if done without permission, would bypass Google Play Store rules.

And as expected DO Global has not responded to any of the requests for a statement on the matter that has been sent since the scandal began.

A spokesman for Google spoke on the matter saying:

"We explicitly ban ad fraud and abuse of service on Google Play."

"Developers are required to disclose the collection of personal data and only use the necessary permissions to deliver the functions within the application."

"If an application violates our policies, we take measures that may include prohibiting a developer from publishing to Play."

The applications were already placed on the blacklist of the Google Play Store and were eliminated, users who still have these applications installed on their Android devices must eliminate them to avoid any kind of problems.

However, BuzzFeed News says that the problem does not arise only from this developer, but "other Android applications with a high number of unnecessary permissions."
