The security flaw in the EA origin Launcher has been repaired.

Underdog Security, a cybersecurity and penetration testing consultancy, recently revealed a security problem in the Electronic Arts EA's Origin games Launcher, which brought the issue of remote code execution as a problem, meaning that anyone could have executed any command on any Windows system with Origin installed, the macOS version was left out of this problem.

But on Monday, TechCrunch announced that EA had already fixed the problem.

Underdog Security said:

"Just curious and observed the origin2 URI driver, when we found a parameter in which we could provide data that would echo to the Origin client, which prompted us to start making modifications".

Previously, PC games did not need launchers, but any user could place the physical storage media of their choice on their machine, install the game on their system and then run it as if to execute any other program.

But this has changed to what it is today, there are countless companies trying to own each step along the PC gaming process with their own social platform startup applications, such as Origin in this case, Valve leading the market with Steam, CD Projekt Red offers DRM-free titles through GOG, Activision Blizzard and Battle.net, Twitch decided briefly to help users monetize through the Twitch game store, Discord introduced game trading on its platform of chat, and Epic Games with the Epic Games Store.

Most of these launchers include influential titles in their lists to force users to use them.

For example, Steam is the only way to play Valve games, such as Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Team Fortress 2. Battle.net hosts people like Overwatch, World of Warcraft and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The Epic Games Store originally housed Fortnite, and Origin a Apex Legends for its place.

Underdog's discovery of this Origin vulnerability also shows how it can be dangerous. Installing more launchers means that attackers have more potential ways to compromise a system.
