The story of Death end re; Quest is based on Arata Mizunashi, a video game programmer, who is contacted via email by Shina Ninomiya, a video game programmer and friend of hers who had disappeared almost a year ago.

Both worked to create the Odyssey of the World, an enveloping virtual landscape driven by cutting-edge and impressive technology.

Arata discovers that Shina Ninomiya had not disappeared, well really, she was trapped in the World Odyssey "WOD". When Arata delves into the lines of code that torment his abandoned project, he realizes that his game is now devastated by an infestation of errors, and that Shina is his only active player.
