Capcom is one of the most successful commercial franchises in Japanese industry during the last thirty years. the sagas to this day, have tens of millions of copies; some less and others more, but there is only one name that leads the list: Resident Evil (RE). According to official data provided by the firm based in Osaka, talking about Biohazard is talking about more than 85 mm copies worldwide in a total of 123 titles if we include reissues, extra versions, ports and remakes.

That is why now, in the middle of January 2019 and at the gates of the re2 remake on PS4, Xbox One and PC, we try to liven up the wait for the return of Claire and Leon by reviewing the sales of all the titles of the franchise, because maybe some of you will be surprised to learn that the most controversial are actually the most successful.

Capcom A dream start

MM units with a video game in Japan, but RE not only triumphed in Japan, but its success spread throughout the planet. The original delivery launched in the first PlayStation back in 1996 accumulated in all its editions more than 2,750,000 copies. But if we take into account the edition of Saturn, the Director's Cut version, Dual Shock Ver. And Deadly Silence, the latter on Nintendo DS, this first numbered edition adds more than 5.33 MM copies.
And re2 remake? The sequel did not have it easy, but it managed to surpass the work that broke the shell when adding between PlayStation, Nintendo 64 and GameCube more than 6.11 MM copies, of which more than 5.7 MM of the total correspond to the Sony console. It is not to say little.

Resident Evil Remake The first great success

The coveted fourth numbered title still needed a cooking time, but in the already initiated sixth generation of consoles there was an intelligent movement on the part of Capcom. If people loved the first RE in their day, it was time to offer it improved, both mechanically and graphically. The result was a successful RE: Remake released on GameCube, Wii, PlayStation 3 and Steam from 2002 to 2015, totaling 4.2 million copies. This RE: HD Remaster has worked successfully even in the Valve store with more than half a million copies.

Even RE 0 did the same with more than 3.25 million units sold on all consoles where it has seen the light (1.9 million correspond to the 2016 edition for Ps4, Xbox One and PC).

Resident Evil 4 and the inflection point: the saga is triggered

But the real leap, the most decisive moment of the survival horror franchise of Capcom, occurred just when he abandoned part of its essence and turned gradually with the action. RE 4, to this day, adds more than 8.22 million units. It is true that it has been released on many systems, including the current PS4 and Xbox One with 1.2 million copies, but the merit of exceeding one million on both PS2 and GCN and Wii allowed to finance the Chronicles Series with The Long Umbrella Chronicles and The Darkside Chronicles.

If everything you've seen so far seemed so much to you, the truth is that it was little about what was to come: RE 5 would break all records by adding more than 12.14 million units sold today, the best-selling delivery of all. Not even the 10 million copies of RE 6 have overshadowed the aces' record of aces in the series. Then we had two deliveries of Revelations, with 2.59 and 2.3 million copies respectively, to finish with the 5.4 MM units of RE 7.

Resident Evil 2 And in Japan?

You already know that the country of the Rising Sun is one of our weaknesses; added to our interest in data and sales make it inevitable for us to devote an epigraph to the performance of the RE franchise in Japan alone. In this case is our protagonist today, RE 2, which takes the palm twice.

And it is not only the video game of the best selling franchise of all time (Famitsu, via Game Data Library) with its 2,456,651 units sold on PlayStation 1 since its launch that January 29, 1998, but it is also the best debut, the fastest sold in its week of store startup with 1,389,733 copies.

As an additional fact, as a curiosity we will say that only RE 3: Nemesis (PSX, 1999) has managed to add more than one million copies in its first week. We could say, however, that since then the popularity of the series has decreased progressively with the passage of time, while in the West it has had sales peaks as we have seen previously.

For example, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard is the least sold of the whole series numbered in Japan with only 394,040 units sold in its PS4 version until this past December 2018.

RE 2 Remake is finally released on January 25 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC, a title that renews from top to bottom seen in the original work of more than twenty years ago. In a few days we will know if it is truly one of the great candidates to remember throughout the year.
