The first thing you need to know is that you can use horses during combat and during explorations, plus you can equip one more horse for a partner.
In case you are going to upgrade a unit and require a horse, it will have to be a specific horse which will be consumed when updating the unit and in return you will receive a new level of equipment.
In the case of Khazuit nomads, they require the Desert Horse to upgrade to the next level when the message "Upgrade requires horse" appears.
Factions could be limited to the same criteria, although this is not yet known with certainty, but in case you want to improve the nomadic units you already know which specimen to look for.
Please note that advanced and specialized horses are Horses and War Horses. So it is recommended to have a copy of each horse to update any unit where a horse is required, so to get it you will have to go to a fenced city and buy one of each horse and then determine which one is needed.
