The
Deployment Phase in Monster Train 2 is a crucial part of every battle, setting the foundation for your strategy. During this phase, players place their initial units, equip them with gear, and prepare their floors for incoming enemies. While the mechanics may seem straightforward, mastering the subtleties of this phase can significantly improve your gameplay.
In this guide, we’ll break down everything you need to know about the
Deployment Phase, including card draws, playing restrictions, and strategic tips to optimize your setup.
How Card Drawing Works in the Deployment Phase
At the start of the
Deployment Phase, players automatically draw several types of cards in a specific order:
Artifact-Augmented Cards – Some artifacts guarantee a draw at the start of the phase:- Attuned Whetstone – Draws an Equipment card and reduces its cost to 0.
- Dante's Footstool – Draws a Room card and reduces its cost to 0.
Your Champion – Your selected champion is always drawn.Banner Units – These units (marked by a blue banner) are automatically drawn.Deployable Equipment & Room Cards – If upgraded to be Deployable, these cards are drawn last.Hand Size Limitations
The maximum hand size in Monster Train 2 is
10 cards. If you draw too many
Banner Units, you might hit this limit before getting your
Deployable Equipment or Room cards, potentially missing key upgrades.
Playing Cards: Rules & Restrictions
While you have flexibility in how you deploy units and upgrades, there are two main limitations:
Ember Cost Limit- The total cost of played cards cannot exceed your Deployment Ember (shown in the bottom-left corner).
- Artifacts can modify this value:
- Artificial Pyrestone (+3 Deployment Ember)
- Odi's Totem (-3 Deployment Ember)
Floor Capacity- Each floor has a default capacity of 5, represented by yellow ovals on unit cards.
- You cannot exceed this limit when placing units.
Ending the Deployment Phase
Once you’ve set up your defenses, press "End Turn" to conclude the phase. Any remaining cards in hand are shuffled back into your deck, meaning you might redraw them later.
Key Considerations:
- Undeployed Banner Units and Deployable cards can appear in the first wave.
- It’s rare but possible to draw your Champion again immediately after the phase.
Pro Tips for Mastering the Deployment Phase
Prioritize High-Impact Units – Since Banner Units are drawn first, focus on strong frontline defenders or damage dealers.Balance Ember Costs – If using cost-reducing artifacts, maximize value by playing multiple upgrades.Avoid Overcrowding Floors – Leave room for later reinforcements or spells that summon additional units.Optimize Hand Size – If your deck has many Banner Units, consider trimming it to ensure you draw Equipment/Room cards.Final Thoughts
Understanding the Deployment Phase in Monster Train 2 is essential for building a strong early-game strategy. By managing your card draws, Ember costs, and floor capacity, you can set up a dominant defense before the first enemy wave arrives.
