How to Survive Toxic Areas in Grounded 2

In the dangerous and expansive backyard of Grounded 2, your survival depends on your ability to overcome a wide variety of environmental and insectoid threats. Among the most pressing of these are the toxic areas—zones filled with noxious gas that will quickly drain your health and make exploration impossible without the right gear. Locations like the Garbage Can and the chemical spill zones are filled with high-tier resources and valuable loot, but are effectively sealed off to unprepared players.Fortunately, overcoming this challenge is more straightforward than it appears. With a single, essential item, you can completely nullify all toxic damage, allowing you to freely explore these hazardous biomes.

Grounded 2: How to Survive Toxic Areas

The most reliable and permanent solution for toxic gas is a Gas Mask. This is a craftable head armor piece that, when worn, provides the Gas Guard buff. This buff makes your character immune to all forms of gas damage, including the environmental fumes from toxic biomes and the poisonous clouds released by Stinkbugs. However, the Gas Mask is not invulnerable. It will lose durability only while you are actively in a toxic zone or taking gas damage. Given its importance for mid-to-late game progression, it is highly recommended to upgrade your Gas Mask using Brittle Plating to increase its durability and make it last longer during your ventures into dangerous areas. As an alternative for shorter expeditions or as an emergency measure, you can use Gastroo Goo. This is a consumable smoothie that grants the Gas Guard buff for a limited time when consumed. It's a useful way to quickly gain immunity for a specific encounter without needing to constantly wear the Gas Mask.

How to Craft a Gas Mask

To get the Gas Mask, you must first unlock the recipe by analyzing a Stinkbug Part at an Analyzer. Once the recipe is unlocked, you can craft the mask at a Workbench using the following materials:

  • Weevil Nose (1): Weevil Noses are dropped by killing Weevils, small, harmless bugs thatare common throughout the backyard, especially in grassy areas.
  • Gnat Fuzz (4): Gnats, which drop this fuzz, are typically found flying around light sources at night.
  • Crude Rope (2): Crude Rope is a basic crafting material made from three pieces of Plant Fiber. You can craft this at a Workbench after analyzing Plant Fiber.
  • Stinkbug Part (1): This is the most difficult material to acquire early on, as it comesfrom a Stinkbug. Since you need a Gas Mask to survive their gas attacks, fighting them directly can be very difficult. A common strategy is tofind a Stinkbug and lure it to a location with other hostile insects, such as the Red Ant Hill, and let them fight each other. You can alsoget Stinkbug parts from breaking open spider egg sacs found in areaslike the Hedge.

How to Make Gastroo Goo

Gastroo Goo is a smoothie that can be crafted at a Smoothie Station. The recipe is unlocked by analyzing a Stinkbug Gas Sack. The ingredients are as follows:

ItemIngredientBaseCrafting Station
Gastroo GooStinkbug Gas Sack x1Grub Sludge OR Gum NuggetSmoothie Station

Roach Chunk x1

Aphid Honeydew x1

To make a smoothie, you must also select a base. You have two options for Gastroo Goo:

  • Grub Sludge: This is the basic base and provides no extra benefits. The Gastroo Goowill grant the Gas Guard buff for a standard duration of two minutes.
  • Gum Nugget: This base gives the smoothie the Sticky modifier, which doubles the duration of the buff, making it last forfour minutes. Gum Nuggets can be harvested from Chewed Gum depositsaround the Upper Yard using a shovel.

Having a stock of Gastroo Goo can be a lifesaver in a pinch, but the Gas Maskremains the best long-term solution for exploring the most toxic anddangerous parts of the backyard.
