Now, if you're wondering how to remove gems, what you should do is use the Horadric Cube, which you can find on the lower floor of the Corridors of the Dead in the second act of the game. With this item you will be able to transmute combinations of items into something else. This will allow you to clean crimped pieces of equipment. The key is to place the crimped item, a Hel rune and a City Portal Scroll in the Cube > then press "Transmute".

The best way to get runes is with the Countess on Nightmare or Hell difficulty.
