Early in Avowed, you'll encounter Ilora, a smuggler imprisoned in Fort Northreach. Your companion, Garryck, advises against freeing her, citing her untrustworthiness. However, freeing Ilora offers several advantages with minimal drawbacks.
Avowed: Should you Free Ilora
Benefits of Freeing Ilora:
- Combat Assistance: If freed, Ilora will aid you in combat throughout the Fort Northreach area. She is particularly helpful during the area's boss fight, drawing aggro and allowing you to focus on dealing damage.
- Lore Insights: Ilora provides Paradisan perspectives and lore.
- "Escape Plan" Quest Help: Later in the game, after reaching Paradis, the "Escape Plan" quest involves negotiating with smugglers. Ilora's connections as a smuggler allow you to resolve the quest peacefully and without extra cost.
Consequences of Not Freeing Ilora:
If you leave Ilora imprisoned, she will eventually escape on her own and attack you during the boss fight in Fort Northreach. This forces you to fight both the boss and Ilora, making the encounter significantly more challenging.
How to Free Ilora:
Second Floor Access: Climb the platforms in Ilora's cell area to reach the second floor. Cross the Gap: Hop across the gap on the second floor. Bow Location: Continue around the room until you can climb onto a stone section. A bow can be found on a corpse to your left. Breakable Floor: Don't drop down to the bramble-blocked corridor yet. Instead, look for a breakable floor near where you climbed up to the stone section. Break the floor with a weapon and drop down. Key Location: The cell key is located next to an unlockable door in the room below the breakable floor. Free Ilora: Return to Ilora's cell and use the key to free her. Bonus Treasure: You can also unlock the cell next to Ilora's for a shortcut to a small treasure. Recommendation:
Freeing Ilora is the generally recommended course of action. Her assistance in combat, lore insights, and help with the "Escape Plan" quest far outweigh any potential risks. Choosing not to free her only makes the Fort Northreach boss fight harder.
